Know Your Stroke Risk
Know Your Risk Factors
Many strokes are preventable. Some factors are out of your control, like family history. Here are other ways to reduce your risk of stroke:
- Lower blood pressure
- Lose weight
- Exercise more
- Drink in moderation
- Treat atrial fibrillation
- Treat diabetes
- Quit smoking
Regular checkups are important in discovering problems before they become serious. Talk with your doctor about steps you can take to lower your risk for stroke.
Know The Warning Signs
When you have a stroke, your brain isn’t getting the blood it needs. Know the warning signs of a stroke and BE FAST
- B – Balance Watch for sudden loss of balance, dizziness, or walking differently
- E – Eyes Check for vision loss, blurry or double vision, or a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes without pain
- F – Face One side of the face may droop or become numb, or look uneven like a crooked smile
- A – Arm One arm may have weakness or numbness, or hang down and can’t be held up straight
- S – Speech Speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may have trouble speaking or seem confused about what you are saying
- T – Time Call 911 immediately and note the time their first symptoms appeared, and share that information with first responders
If you recognize any of these warning signs, don’t drive, and don’t wait. Call 911. Quick treatment is the best way to reduce the long-term effects of a stroke.
