Daniel P. Hunt, MD

Dan Hunt, MD is the Director of the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Emory University of School of Medicine. Before moving to Emory in 2015, Danu’s professional experience included private practice of general internal medicine, academic internal medicine at a safety-net hospital, extensive involvement in medical education, and substantial leadership experience at a major academic medical center. Dan received his MD degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. After completing internal medicine residency training at Baylor College of Medicine, he enjoyed eleven years in the private practice of general internal medicine in Houston, ultimately becoming a partner with the Medical Clinic of Houston in the Texas Medical Center. He returned to academic medicine as a clinician educator at Baylor College of Medicine in 1995. He focused much of his clinical teaching on the inpatient wards at the Ben Taub General Hospital, while also participating in small group activities, large lecture hall teaching, and leadership/development of major educational initiatives. Dr. Hunt was recruited in 2005 by the Massachusetts General Hospital to develop and lead the Inpatient Clinician Educator Service for the Department of Medicine. This service grew to thirteen dedicated clinical teachers/scholars many of whom have become nationally-prominent in the field. In 2010, Dan became the Chief of the Hospital Medicine Unit at the MGH, combining the Clinician Educator Service and the larger direct-care Hospital Medicine Group under a unified administrative structure. Under his leadership, the Unit grew to a total of 75 faculty with diverse interests and expertise in medical education, global health, clinical operations, and quality improvement. Dr. Hunt’s teaching efforts were recognized with the Baylor House Staff Teaching Award each year from 1997-2005 among a total of 35 Baylor teaching honors. He received the Alfred Kranes Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at the MGH in 2006 and 2011, the Best Clinical Instructor Award from Harvard Medical School in 2008, the Society of Hospital Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011, and a Golden Apple Teaching Award from the Emory Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2016.
