Advanced Mammography for Peace of Mind
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among Georgia women, affecting 30 percent of women with cancer. That’s why we created Grady’s Comprehensive Breast Center. It offers breast screenings and treatment using the latest techniques, technology, and research in a modern, patient-focused setting.
Yearly mammograms are the best way to detect early-stage breast cancer when it’s most treatable. But most women do not get these annual x-rays. At Grady, scheduling a mammogram is easy, and it will be read by some of the most specialized, experienced radiologists in Atlanta. These specialists only analyze breast images, so they recognize subtle signs of problems that less experienced radiologists might miss.
Grady offers the following services to diagnose breast cancer:
- Mammograms
- Breast ultrasound
- Breast MRI
- Breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography
- Breast biopsy – fine needle aspiration (FNA), core needle biopsy, surgical (open) biopsy, and node biopsy
If you need treatment, Grady’s breast cancer team has expertise across the full range of breast cancer care: breast surgery, medical and radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, clinical genetics, pathology, and nursing. And we offer the latest mammogram technology, including breast tomosynthesis, breast MRI, and image-guided biopsies and localizations. Soon, we will be starting a contrast-enhanced mammography program.
Just as important, our doctors, nurses, and other specialists specialize in you and your needs. We will be a steady companion and partner, helping you choose just the right treatment and offering the support you need.
Why Choose Us
Grady’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center is the only public hospital program in the southeastern United States to be fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a coveted national recognition of our expertise and results. We also meet the high standards to be an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
This means Grady’s breast team offers some of the best medical care in Atlanta.
We are one of only a handful of U.S. hospitals staffed by multidisciplinary cancer specialists from more than one medical school. Our physicians serve on the faculties of Emory and Morehouse University schools of medicine. They use Atlanta’s newest medical technology to diagnose and care for patients. And, because Grady has one of the region’s most active cancer research programs, we offer access to some of medicine’s most promising emerging therapies.
Because cancer often comes with other health concerns, Grady offers one more advantage. We’ve spent more than 125 years building the most comprehensive medical services in Atlanta to deliver the best care possible.

Research
Sometimes, the standard of care is not enough. That’s when Grady research offers hope.
As one of the nation’s elite teaching hospitals, our clinicians are continually involved in research to find better, more effective treatments. We are committed to investigations that will ultimately end cancer. Physicians, oncologists, surgeons, and other cancer experts from the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory, Emory and Morehouse schools of medicine, and Grady Health System collaborate on research whose mission is to improve cancer treatments, test the effectiveness of new drugs and transform cancer care.
On any given day, our experts are involved in literally dozens of cancer studies – from clinical trials to laboratory experiments. Grady’s history of research has helped to redefine how physicians worldwide treat cancer, stroke, and other diseases. The benefit to patients is clear: They have access to tomorrow’s medicine today, providing options unavailable at many other institutions.
Grady Stories
Our Doctors
Every hospital treats patients. At Grady, we strive to treat them better, more efficiently, and more effectively. Our mission to care for all who need us attracts physicians from across the nation. They are drawn here by the knowledge that we test the limits of medicine by innovating existing standards of care, researching cutting-edge drugs and therapies, and exploring novel treatments.
Our zeal for innovation has given Grady a national reputation for medical advancement in areas like cancer, burn, stroke, diabetes, infectious diseases, women’s health, sickle cell, and other conditions cared for by specialists in our centers of excellence. Access to all of these accredited practices is available to every Grady patient, and our collegial environment means that specialists routinely help to care for their colleagues’ patients.
Though clinicians are drawn by Grady’s reputation, most are employed by the Emory and Morehouse schools of medicine, which staff our medical services. Grady is one of a handful of U.S. health systems whose patients are cared for by faculty members of two medical schools. This reinforces our commitment to ongoing innovation.
