Dr. Gregory S. Martin, MD, MSc, FACP, FCCP, FCCM, ATSF

Chair of Critical Care

Dr. Greg S. Martin, M.D., M.Sc. is Professor of Medicine at Emory University in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, where he is the Executive Associate Division Director. Dr. Martin completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University; medical school, residency and subspecialty fellowship training were completed at Vanderbilt University and a post-graduate Master of Science degree at Emory University. Dr. Martin serves as the Research Director for the Emory Critical Care Center (ECCC), Director of the Emory/Georgia Tech Predictive Health Institute and the affiliated Center for Health Discovery and Well Being, and the Director of the multi-institutional Clinical Research Centers within the NIH-funded Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA). At Grady Memorial Hospital, Dr. Martin serves as the chair of the Critical Care Committee.
Dr. Martin’s conducts clinical research in critically ill patients, particularly in sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), spanning epidemiology and health services research through biomarker studies to randomized trials of new treatments. Dr. Martin’s clinical trials studying fluid balance in ARDS led to definitive trials conducted by the ARDS Network and set the foundation for clinical care. His health services research in sepsis produced the first national scale longitudinal study of sepsis, demonstrating secular trends in the incidence and outcome, and important healthcare disparities.
Dr. Martin is a member of several professional societies and serves on the board of directors for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, where he will serve as President in 2021. Of his many awards and honors, Dr. Martin received the Golden Apple teaching award from Emory University.
